Steven Smith is a man, who is unlike most others. At over 70 years old there is very little he will not do to help those in need. His self-proclaimed adopted-daughter Dawn describes him as the “Helper of all helpers. The most selfless man she knows.” Having met at church, she has witnessed a bevy of good deeds, from diving dump runs for strangers in need, to house-sitting for his fellow citizens’ loved ones while they run important errands. He is also willing to fix anything, even if it means climbing on roofs, crawling under homes, plumbing, and even electrical work. There is no task too large for a man with such a big heart.

Since he was very young Steven was raised to help others. Whether it was caring for his grandmother with the help of his brother, or taking care of this own parents, Steven was there to lend a hand. In his words, “Jesus came to serve, not be served.” This is why he was more than happy to adopt his grandson who was born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. In 2010 After the process was said and done, and the parents appeared to have given up on the child entirely, Steven decided to forgo his retirement and adopt his now 13-year-old grandson.

If someone is able to be helped, you can be sure that Steven is there to do what he can.

It is no secret that this has been a tough year for many, including Stephen and his Wife. Although they have been living on a limited income, they have not let that dampen their spirits. When his Van broke down, you can still hear the optimism in Steven’s voice as he recognizes that this would only slow down his compassion for helping people. At the end of the day helping people is what he was put here to do.

This is why we are proud to announce that thanks to some amazing partnerships in our community, that we can help return the favor and help Steven for a change.  Thanks to our partnership with Big O Tires, Steven’s van will be back on the road in no time. DC Farmers Co-Op plans to help Steven offset the costs of fuel so he can be sure to continue traveling and serve his community. Steven will also be given a gift card for Home Depot, so he can be sure to have any supplies or tools he needs to get the job done right.  And we all know that Teenagers can be expensive, that is why both Fred Meyers, and Sherm’s Thunderbird Market will be supplying Steven with a generous gift card to help keep his home well supplied throughout the holidays.

While trimming trees Stephens glasses were also quite damaged, but this never stopped him from wanting to help, even when he can barely see. That is why Dr. Thomas Leech will be supplying Steven with a new prescription and set of glasses to help out as well.

Thank you to Rogue Credit Union and all our other wonderful sponsors.

And thank you to Steven for truly making this world a better place to live!
